Call for Papers and/or Presentations
National Conference on Disaster for the Carless Society

Transportation Center, in partnership with the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission and the Regional Transit Authority, is organizing a National Conference on Disaster Planning for the Car-less
Society. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita revealed the importance of evacuation planning, especially for people without the ability or means to drive. All cities in the United States are vulnerable to natural
and human caused disasters. The focus of this conference is on evacuation planning for car-less residents, including the elderly, disabled, and transit dependent populations. Our intent is to bring
together government officials, professionals, and experts to discuss how we can better prepare for those that are in most need.
Presentations and/or Papers may
focus on, but are not limited to :
-Transit and planning for evacuation purposes
-Evacuating the elderly homebound
-Evacuating disabled residents
-Evacuating residents from group homes and hospitals
-Evacuating institutionalized populations
-Accommodating special needs during evacuation
-Accommodating special needs at receiving locations
-Role of local, state, and federal government
-Role of metropolitan planning organizations
-Role of transit agencies and special needs transportation providers
-Intergovernmental cooperation for large scale evacuations
-Lessons learned from previous evacuations
Abstracts for presentations and/or
papers are due August 15, 2006. You must complete an abstract form at: http://www.carlessevacuation.org/call.htm
The completed abstract submission
form must be emailed to Dr. John Renne at jrenne@uno.edu. Authors will be notified by September 15, 2006 and papers will be due November 1, 2006. Authors who choose peer reviewed papers will receive
feedback about their papers by December 15, 2006. All final papers and presentations will be due by January 15, 2007. All papers and presentations will be published electronically on this website.
